Cumin Seeds - Jeera
JEERA (CUMIN)
JEERA (CUMIN) , IS ONE OF THE TRADITIONAL INDIAN SPICES. Many cuisines use it as a spice around the world. Jeera seeds are used as a spice. Many spice blends like Garam masala, Kala masala have jeera as an important ingredient.
In many curries oil or ghee is sautéed with jeera. It’s one of the important Ayurvedic medicine along with been a loved spice.
Jeera has a bitter taste, and a hot potency hence it is helpful in reducing Kapha and Vata dosha. It aggravates Pitta dosha, if taken in large amounts. According to modern nutrition, Cumin is a good source of magnesium, iron, calcium and phosphorous. It is also a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, K and B6. Jeera consumption per day should not be more than 2 teaspoons, as it may aggravate Pitta Dosha. The name itself Jeera originates from Sanskrit Jeeryate, that is which helps to digest. Jeera helps in improving digestion.
Jeera seeds are both used in raw as well as roasted powder form for medicines. It’s always good to have at least 2 to 3 spoons jeera seeds roasted a bit and made into powder stored in airtight container for ready use.
Jeera seeds chewed raw around quarter teaspoon help in relieving nausea as well as morning sickness. Jeera seeds around half teaspoon at night with warm water also increases the quality of sleep.
Many a times post fever or many ailments there is loss of taste. This loss of taste can be reduced by chewing half teaspoon raw jeera seeds .
Heartburn, burps followed by a bad rotten smell can be relieved by having a teaspoon of jeera powder and a pinch of elaichi (cardamom) powder.
Consuming jeera 1 teaspoon with warm water before meals helps in improving digestion, reducing gas trouble, diarrhoea especially associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
A mixture of one teaspoon of jeera powder, half teaspoon black pepper powder with half teaspoon of sunthi ( dry ginger) powder, with a quarter teaspoon of lemon juice taken 15 days every day before lunch and dinner is beneficial to improve appetite and digestion power.
Jeera seeds, ajwain seeds , fennel seeds each one teaspoon boiled in water , with a bit of sugar. This decoction should be strained and cooled. This water taken at least 2 to 3 teaspoons in a day works as an excellent remedy for indigestion and colic pain in small children.
Jeera powder and Coriander seeds powder mixture is used in many ailments as I have already described in the Coriander seeds article written earlier.
A famous Indian rice recipe ,Jeera rice has Cumin as its main flavour. Jeera rice also sautéed with a bit of curry leaves, chilli and then mixed with curd is also a very age old loved recipe.
