ALSI (FLAX SEED)
ALSI , also called Flax Seeds are one of the things that are now been treated as super food. It is a known for its medicinal benefits in Ayurveda. But still it should be consumed with caution as linseed oil that is the oil obtained from Flax seeds may cause allergic reactions. Also, if taken in too much quantity and that too raw, it may cause bloating.
Alsi causes Pitta prakop that is aggravates Pitta so it should be used in caution by people having hyperacidity. It is not advisable for those suffering from bleeding disorders, heavy periods to use Alsi seeds.
According to modern nutrition, flax seeds are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and hence beneficial to our body. Ayurveda describes Alsi as sweet and a bit bitter to taste, helpful in vata disorders. Let’s see how we can put this to our benefit in our daily lives!
It is advisable to use Alsi seeds after roasting or after boiling it, as when eaten raw they may cause allergies and also bloating,
It is useful in dry cough to reduce cough. Take a teaspoon of Alsi , 1 small onion preferably white, half an inch Ginger, half teaspoon Dhana (coriander seeds) in a bowl add 4 cups boil and reduce to 1 cup. Strain the decoction; add a small piece of jaggery and have twice a day. Making fresh decoction each time take it for around 4 to 5 days it reduces dry cough.
Roasted Alsi seeds can be used daily before and after meals like appetizer. You can also add roasted fennel seeds along with them. Half teaspoon of the mixture after lunch and dinner is helpful in reducing cholesterol. Also these seeds help to feel satiated and hence help in obesity by reducing hunger cravings.
In painful arthritis with swollen joints, flax seeds when made into paste and applied to swollen joints helps to relieve pain.
Mixture of Kulith Powder, Vekhand powder , Alsi powder is given for local application as udvartana to reduce Kapha dosha. This has to be done only after consulting ayurvedic physician .
There is small recipe where you can prepare alsi chutney, here it is
Roasted alsi seeds 2 to 3 teaspoons
5 to 6 Garlic petals
Til roasted 2 to 3 teaspoon Blend this mixture in a blender along with slt, sugar and chilli powder as per taste.
